(Cover to Action Comics #785 published by D. C. Comics.)
Hello to all who are fans of either The Fab Four: John, Paul, George & Ringo, as well to any comic book fans out there. Especially to those comic fans that love that wacky DC creation: the Bizarros!
WELCOME ALL!
BUT FIRST....A LITTLE THEORY...
You may be asking yourself, "Well, I DO like The BEATLES, and, I DO like The BIZARROS, but---"why" this combination?
Okay. It's like this. I've always had this little theory; mind you, it may sound a little odd, but just take it with as many grains of salt you care to give to it.
In Adventure Comics (published by D.C. Comics) #290 (November, 1961 issue) there's a scene where a bizarro "Lois Lane" is singing a rock & roll song. The lyrics of this song are strangely similiar to The Beatles' first million copy seller in the U.S., "She Loves You". It's a documented fact that members of The Beatles were comic book fans, and have indeed been photographed with copies of DC Comics. Now, remember: "She Loves You" didn't become an actual recording until sometime later in the U.K., which was AFTER this bizarro appearence.So---Did Paul and John see this book and get inspired by her wacky lyrics and create one of their best known songs? Is it even remotely possible that without The Bizarros, The Beatles wouldn't have gotten as popular in the U.S. because of that No.1 Hit Record here? Granted, "Beatlemania" didn't begin in this country, but in the U.K. and Europe first, but we all know how the rest of the world follows whatever trends the U.S. sets, especially in the early 1960's when John Kennedy was still our president and offered this planet a new hope. It was scarcely 2 months from the time of his assassination and our country still in shock and morning that The Fab Four sprang forth from our t.v. sets and helped a country mend its grief.
Without the influence of The Beatles in this country as well as their popularity, there would probably not have been The British Invasion of music back then. Without the trends set by The Beatles and other rock groups, how would that have affected our lives? Would the counter-culture not have existed? Would the "hippie" movement never occured? Would the on-growing support for minorities slowed down and kept our opinions regarding racism still in the dark ages? Would such topics as marijuana and drugs never come into view? Would the Viet Nam War have continued way beyond its time had it not been due to the opinion against it (mainly by our country's youth movement)?
Strange how one little thing can affect so very many OTHER things in history. True, The Beatles probably WOULD have been just as popular. The counter-culture and minority movements probably would have gone along just as they did before, and Viet Nam would have finally petered out for this country eventually.
But maybe not. Maybe we all owe a bigger thanks to the co-creator of Superman, Jerry Siegel, (who wrote that bizarro story in question) and a larger debt of gratitude than any one of us could ever image.

Now...let's start with the basics.
BEATLES' APPEARANCES IN COMIC BOOKS & COMIC MAGAZINES:
FOREWORD:
Since the early 1960's there has been two great loves in my life: comic books, and The Beatles. I've collected everything I ever came across on The Beatles, including what I could find in comic books and comic magazines. Here, in the last few years, I finally decided to try to compile what I could of a "complete" listing of their appearances, cameos or even just a mention in the comic book format. Although there has been more than one article written and published on this subject, they tend to concentrate on just the "major" appearances. This is an attempt to make that information more complete. These are listed by order of their appearance.
This listing is seperated into four groups: "Mainstream" comics (those which appeared on the regular newstands or "spinner racks", or even if are presently Direct Sales type titles were published by a mainstream publisher), "Independent Publishers" (titles not normally found on the conventional newstand), "Underground Comix"(or independent publishers which at times contain material which would have never passed the Comics Code Authority's guidelines), and comic MAGAZINE appearences (or, magazine-sized format comic books and related magazine-type appearances which related to comic strip material). Other listings included are from Trade paperback collections, hardcover reprints and regular-sized paperbacks.
There's probably other comic book appearances that I don't know about and would appreciate it if you know of any to consider to adding to the list.
(Many of these listed here that I don't personally own and whenever that information comes into question I have put a question mark next to it, so any corrections you care to send to me at: dpuck@scrtc.com are always helpful.)
Note: This list was first compiled in late 2003, and is up-dated on a regular basis as new app.'s, parodies, cameos, etc. are "discovered".
Also to be noted here is that these are only app.'s that have I have found in comic books published in the U.S.A.. There are hundreds of app.'s published in UK comics, Mexican, and other foreign countries, as well as many reprints of U.S. app.'s published abroad. See the addition I have posted at the end of this list for hundreds of foreign app.'s.!
I'd like to furthermore state that the page listing as to the reference, mention, appearance, etc., is the STORY page, NOT counting advertisement pages (as many more recently published comic books no longer individually number the pages).

Devil Dinosaur (Marvel) #5 (8/78) I consider this an exception to the no ad rule regarding appearances. Obviously all Marvel comic titles with either a 8/78 OR 9/78 cover date contained ads for The Beatles' Marvel Super Special #4 ("Beatles" issue). This IS original work, rather than a reprint; illustrations created unique to the product it advertises. This particular issue (like the issue of Iron Man #114 (9/78) has the 1/4 page ad illustration of the group on the "Letter's Page", PLUS a spot illustration drawing of the group at the bottom of the "Bullpen Bulletin's" page. (There are probably variations depending on whether the titles carried letter pages.) Similiarly, any issues with a cover date of 12/78 (and perhaps those with either a cover date of 11/78, OR 1/79) may all contain a mention of The Beatles in "Stan's Soapbox" (in the "Bullpen Bulletin" page), depending on whether the title was or was not a monthly publication. They are definately mentioned in Devil Dinosaur #9 (12/78) in such manner.
Iron Man V1 (Marvel) #114 (9/78) Yet another exception to my "no ads" rule here as on the letters-of-comment page of this particular issue there is a 1/4 page advertisement for the Marvel Super Special #4 ("Beatles' issue) depicting The Fab Four with new artwork, therefore making it an original cameo appearance.
All-New Collector's Edition (DC/"treasury"-size) No.C-56 (1978):"Superman VS. Muhammad Ali". App.'s of all 4 of The Beatles, PLUS Yoko Ono on front cover in crowd scene. NOTE: WHITMAN variation ALSO exists!)
Spider-Woman V1 (Marvel) #16 (7/79) Title of story is "All You Need Is HATE" (a take-off of The Beatles' song, "All You Need Is LOVE").

(Books that didn't make the listings:
If a comic book just has advertizements for Beatles photos, that doesn't qualify for an actual appearance, cameo, mention or parody. Such books would be titles and numbers as:
Tippy Teen(Tower) #'s 16(19/67) or 26(12?/69) which has 1 to 2 pages of advertisements w/Beatles photos, Patsy Walker (Marvel) #122 (1/2 page Beatles photo ad), Go-Go and Animal(Tower) #6 (10/67) which has a full page Beatles ad, Millie the Model(Marvel) #203(8/73), Tomb of Dracula(Marvel) #10(7/73) or other Marvel titles which featured a small advertizement for Cream Magazine which had a photo of John Lennon in the ad, Birds of Prey(DC) #'s 6(6/99),7(7/99) or any other DC book from that time which featured a full 1 page advertizement with a photo of Ringo Starr. Also, just the name of The Beatles in an advertizement does not constitute a mention, such as the 45 RPM record ad in Teen Confessions(Charlton) #41(11/66), or any other comic as such. Also not a true appearance would be such books as: America's Best TV Comics(American Broadcast Company Television Network publication) "nn"(1967) or any other comic book from the same time period which featured an advertizement for the ABC-TV 1967 Saturday morning cartoon shows line-up which has a Beatles segment.
Also NOT included in actual appearances is Millie the Model(Marvel) #137(5/66) which features an appearance of "The Groovy Gears". Although issue #135(2/66) IS listed as such, that particular issue also made comparisons to The Beatles and mentioned The Beatles by name numberous times. But,to the best of my research on #137 I can find NO actual mention or references to The Beatles in that issue.
Also not listed are multiple reprints in paperback, trade paperback or hardcover books, or foriegn reprints of any books in the actual listing. If these were ever able to be compiled I'd dare say such a listing would be in the hundreds, possibly thousands of issues.
And, I know as fact, that there has to be several appearances, mentions and/or cameos of The Beatles as a group or individually in various issues of comics dedicated to rock & roll stars published by Revolutionary Comics (The one on Erik Clapton is a good example, and perhaps in the one on Bob Dylan. Anyone who can send me any particulars regarding them would be greatly appreciated as they would be true comic book appearences. I would need the issue #, the title of the book, the page(s) and panel(s), whether it's a cameo (2 or 3 panels) or an appearance (1 to 3 pages), or just a mention, plus I would need the date(both the month & year it was published); Thanks!
Other actual appearances of The Beatles in comic book form(or, comic "strip" format) I consider as justified in the following comic MAGAZINE format type publications:
THE MAGAZINES(listed alphabetically rather than by dates):

Since the previous listings have appeared on this blog site I have received numberous listings from collectors, all of which I wish to thank once again, and this following extremely lengthly list comes from Fabio Schiavo of Italy which gives us an unbelievable number of foreign sightings of "The Fab Four"! (Many, many Thanks, Fabio!) One of the earliest foreign Beatles' references I've seen is a parody cover to a comic called: Condorito (1955 series/See Above) on its final issue (#13/April, 1964, Published by a company called "Zig-Zag" in Chili, South America), but since then there's been just as many or even more Beatles stuff in non-U.S. comics.

"The BIG THANK YOU!
Before I go any further, I need to take the time to express my appreciation to those who, without their help, what you're all reading here simply would not exist.
First, to my good, and very long time friend, David Jones. he turned me on to Blogger so without his help I wouldn't have this free space to use for these listings. Thanks, Dave for letting me ask a zillion questions!
Next, thanks to all my friends on the eBay Comic Book Board for helping me find misc. Beatles' app.'s in comics that I didn't even know existed! (ESPECIALLY, YOU, Jerro, Bob, Win and others!) Plus I appreciate all their suggestions and comments.
Thanks too to Fred Hembeck for his encouragement and help. Love your "Fredsez" stuff!
A BIG Thank you to my good Italian friend, Fabio for all of the foreign Beatles appearances!
And I have to thank The Fab Four themselves: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, because without them, half of this blog wouldn't be here, as well as all the comic book publishers, editors, artists and writers who allowed their images and references in comic books! Plus my thanks to those who make the SECOND half of this blog possible: Mort Weisinger, Julius Schwartz , Otto Binder, George Papp, Al Plastino, Curt Swan, Stan Kaye, Jerry Siegel, Wayne Boring, John Forte, Sheldon Moldoff, Kurt Schoffenberger and anyone else who was responcible for The Bizarro stories. Many of these names are no longer with us today; I really wish I could have thanked each and every one of them personally for the many fond memories they gave us.

AND NOW-----The BIZARROS!
(Above pictured: A D.C. Comics' 80 Page Superman Giant totally devoted to reprints of various Bizarro stories.)
BIZARRO CODE: "US DO OPPOSITE OF ALL EARTHLY THINGS! US HATE BEAUTY! US LOVES UGLINESS! IS BIG CRIME TO MAKE ANYTHING PERFECT ON BIZARRO WORLD!"
(As stated in ACTION COMICS #263, April, 1960 Issue).
(NOTE: BIZARRO is copyrighted D.C. Comics, Inc.. Listings and quotes listed on this site are reproduced solely for their historical and documentary value, and as a tribute to the many fine creators at D.C. Comics who brought us this bizarre and enjoyable creation over the years.)
BIZARRO: The wacky, imperfect "duplicate" of Superman who first appeared in ACTION COMICS (DC) #254 (July, 1959).
Well...that's not totally correct. The FIRST Bizarro was actually an imperfect duplicate of SuperBOY who appeared first in a cameo in SUPERBOY Vol.1 (DC) #67 (Sept.,1958) in a 1/4 page advertisement cameo for the NEXT issue, #68 (duh.)Oct., 1958 issue, which was his true introduction and Origin. This advertisement also appeared in Adventure Comics #252 (SAME cover date as the Superboy #67, and may have as well appeared in OTHER DC titles at that time, in particular those of the "Superman family".)
Bizarro was created when Professor Dalton in Smallville accidently shined his duplicator machine's ray on Superboy. The machine struck the floor and exploded and when the smoke cleared, there was this chalky-chiseled-faced imperfect creature in a Superboy suit. His muddled mind heard Superboy called him a "bizarre" creature and he misunderstood him as saying "Bizarro", thus the name. It was actually a pretty tragic tale. Bizarro befriends a blind girl, and his only thoughts are wanting to fit in with others, but dismayed by his failure to do so.
Superboy discovers that the only weakness the creature would have is a piece of the damaged duplicator machine that now had a strange glowing effect, so before Blue Kryptonite ever could hurt Biz', THAT was his original weakness. In fact, the original Biz' actually commits suicide by flying straight at Superboy when he has a piece of the machine and disentigrates. The effects of his destruction has a happy side; it cures the young girl of her blindness.
It was a bit of a Frankenstein monster tale; Bizarro even resembled the good doctor's infamous creation.
And that was all we saw of Bizarro...for a good eight months. Then, someone at DC got the bright idea of bringing him back only this time as an ADULT and as the imperfect duplication of SuperMAN. Here is where the ACTION #254 came into play. Superman's arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, RE-creates Prof. Dalton's machine and shines it purposely at Superman, and---viola! Bizarro "lives" again (if one can truely call anything made of non-living matter alive)! This first male, adult Bizarro is the one we would all come to know as Bizarro NO. 1, although it was actually a bit later until he was designated as such by his peers on Bizarro World and given the familiar circular, stone medallion with this lettering ingraved upon it.
As muddle-minded as the first Bizarro, this Biz' causes all sorts of havok even abducting Lois Lane and nearly wrecking Superman's secret I.D. until the next issue (and the first of a couple of continued Bizarro stories in ACTION) when Lois purposely shines the ray upon herself creating the first Bizarro Lois Lane. The bizarre couple instantly fall in love (of course) and fly off together to create a bizarre world. Guess this just shows there's a gal for EVERY guy no matter what he looks like, huh?
Yet another 8 months pass and we see the second 2 parter story in ACTION 263-264 where Superman gets in dutch by visiting the world where the Bizarro couple are living, only to find a whole race has been created with a duplicator machine (guess that Biz' guy wasn't as dumb as we thought)! This is the storyline where he first gets called Bizarro NO.1, and where Superman stands trial on their world because he sees some broken down buildings and makes them look new. BUT---Being PERFECT is a BIG crime on The World of Bizarros!
He does get out of this though when he points out that their world is perfectly ROUND, and uses a gigantic scoop to even off the sides turning the planet into the one we grew to love, the SQUARE Bizarro World! (Please don't ask me how he kept from destroying the non-super members of the bizarro society while accomplishing this task; mark that up to the wonderful world of early silver-age comic book writing).
As the 1960's went by we started getting more variations of bizarros than Shazam could throw magic lightning bolts, treating us to the likes of bizarro versions of: SuperGIRL, Krypto, Jimmy Olsen, Lucy Lane, Lana Lang, Perry White, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Lex Luthor (ironic, isn't it?), Batman, The Flash and other noted DC characters. Also here we had the creation of Blue Kryptonite (which was as deadly to a Bizarro Superman as Green K to the "real" one).
Finally, in ADVENTURE COMICS #285 (June,1961) the bizarros got their own series called: "Tales of the Bizarro World" which ran until #299 (Aug.,1962). The series was replaced in #300 with The Legion of Super-Heroes. I guess The Legion was just getting more popular, or perhaps the TOTBW writer (Jerry Siegel, the co-creator of Superman, himself) was simply running out of ideas. This series is reprinted in the 2000 Trade Paperback, SUPERMAN: TALES OF THE BIZARRO WORLD (DC), all written by Siegel and with some great artwork by the likes of John Forte, Wayne Boring and Curt Swan. (A really "fun" read and I highly recommend!)
I figure the number of Silver-Age appearences of The Bizarros (1958-1969) at around 58 full app.'s and cameos, including 12 reprints, although I could have missed a few minor ones. The 12 reprints appear in various DC Annuals and 80 page Giants, the best of which is SUPERMAN Vol. 1 #202 (aka: 80 Pg.Giant 42) which is ALL Bizarro stories with a new cover illustration by Curt Swan.
After the 1960's, the character just never was the same even though Bizarro No.1 did occasionally make an appearence "somewhere" in various Superman-Family titles. There was even an animated version of him in some of the Superman cartoon shows like "Super Friends" as well as in that comic book title.
The original Bizarro No.1 met his demise in the last issue of Vol.ONE of SUPERMAN (#423/Sept.,1986) when his commited "suicide" by exposing himself to Blue K. (Funny how Superman could never get rid of Bizarro, but in both the original AND the adult versions, he "offs" himself!) Although John Byrne first brought the character back in the MAN OF STEEL Limited Series shortly afterwards, believe me, it just wasn't the same character, and even though DC has had him appear numberous times since, it's simply not that goofy, muddled creation from the 1950-60's I grew up reading.
Here then you've read Bizarro's history, and next a listing as complete as I can figure as to his appearences in comics PRE-1970.
